2026, 30 May, Place Clairefontaine<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are gathered in the heart of the capital to protest, one final time, against the intention of the Chamber of Deputies of Luxembourg to enshrine abortion as a guaranteed freedom in our Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A year ago, we would not have imagined that such a drift could command the required majority. This constitutional revision was in no way announced before the legislative elections, and its subject matter has no place in the Constitution. Abortion is a sensitive, complex, and divisive issue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Constitution is the fundamental law of our State: it must unite, inspire trust, and not divide; it must also be inclusive of the weakest and most vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sadly, on 3 March 2026, it happened. Under the grip and intimidation of an extremely powerful lobby promoting abortion and backed by the media, a large majority rallied behind a proposal that is not even legally clarified: the Council of State and the deputies still have no clear understanding of the difference between a right and a freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We thank all the deputies who had the courage to say NO or to abstain, and we call on the others to do the same at the second vote. Otherwise, Luxembourg will become the second country in the world to constitutionalise abortion, three years after France’s feverish reaction to the overturning of Roe v. Wade in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is neither progress nor a source of pride to deprive Article 12 of the Constitution of its meaning, which states: “Human dignity is inviolable”!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To have a Constitution that makes no mention of the most fundamental human right\u2014the right to life\u2014while enshrining the guaranteed freedom to end a life before birth is not worthy of a country that claims to uphold democratic values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The constitutionalisation of abortion, eclipsing the right to life, is already serving as a springboard toward other so-called advances, such as the criminalisation of obstruction to abortion, the removal of the conscience clause for medical personnel, and the ever-greater extension \u2014 or even outright abolition \u2014 of the time limit for abortion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today we bear witness that L\u2019Oeuvre pour la Vie Naissante<\/em> offers positive alternatives, in favour of women, families, and unborn children. Rather than condemning, we wish to promote information, prevention, psychological support, and all material assistance made possible through our volunteers in the consultation group and the clothing bank, and through the solidarity and generosity of our donors. Because: To the “alternative fact” of a cluster of cells, we oppose the scientific reality of the humanity of life before birth. To the right to abortion, we oppose the right not to be under pressure to abort. To the criminalisation of obstruction to abortion, we oppose the criminalisation of incitement to abortion. To convenient solutions, we oppose a discourse on the inestimable value and dignity of every human life, regardless of its condition or age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We demand that the right to life be enshrined in the Constitution, and will examine as swiftly as possible the opportunity to launch a petition to that end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
