MADRID, COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS, FRIDAY, 24TH NOVEMBER 2023
he global demand to emphasize the ethical axes (as a science of morality) and humanistic (referring to the set of ideas that express respect for human dignity and concern for the good of the human being) in the 21st century health system is supported not only in the observation of behaviors that sometimes deviate from appropriate behaviors, but also of legislations and inequities that generate concern in society.
The ancient Greeks demanded that the basic professions, such as politics (according to Plato, the science of government of people), the priesthood, medicine, and those dealing with the Law, be based on ethics. Among all these, medicine always stood out for such concern. But ethics does not occur in a vacuum. What we qualify as such is a type of human behavior that conforms to the social norms established for constructive and peaceful coexistence, in order to achieve, as Aristotle stated, the supreme good of happiness.
In that sense, ethical behavior does not depend exclusively on one actor (in this case, the health professional) but, like all human behavior, is determined by multiple situational factors of the environment in which it develops.
Ethical and humanistic training in care and health will be analyzed in this congress from a comprehensive conception and from the respect for the dignity of the human being.
