Very serious failings were discovered at BPAS Bournemouth, situated on Ophir Road, which was subject to a CQC inspection on 28 June 2022.
One discovery was the discarding of individual baby remains “into a shared vessel”. This finding followed a similar incident at a BPAS abortion facility in Tipton where baby parts were dumped in a utility room cupboard at room temperature.
The CQC also found that three abortions at BPAS Bournemouth “had been carried out without the required legal documentation being present or fully completed”. This included an abortion for which BPAS staff had “not obtained two signatures to authorise the termination in line with legal requirements set out in the Human Abortion Act 1967…
“Such incidents had not been investigated as thoroughly as they should have been at the time… and had not been reported to the Care Quality Commission, which was in breach of the provider’s conditions of registration.”
Safety concerns were also raised, including a surgeon “not wearing a surgical gown nor a visor during a surgical termination. This did not comply with national guidance for infection prevention and control.”
A SPUC spokesperson said: “BPAS’s callous disregard of the bodily remains of aborted babies has been exposed in yet another damning investigation by the CQC. Such a catalogue of appalling failures, openly flouting CQC safety guidelines and basic legal requirements, is more than concerning – going hand in hand with the even more horrendous destruction of thousands of unborn babies”
The One of Us Federation denounces this humiliating and inhumane treatment of aborted babies and demands a complete review of the treatment of these remains in all countries. All abortion centers must be controlled and follow quality standards so that these practices do not occur.
