The debate on euthanasia is coming closer in Portugal and a proposal of law is expected in the first quarter of 2017. Meanwhile, a petition for “Assisted Death” is making its way on the parliament (nine thousand signatures) and an important prolife group of associations expect to deliver another petition at the parliament the first week of December (for the moment they have thirteen thousand signatures). The petition is entitled “Every Life is Dignity Worth” and you may find it here:
With the current composition of the Parliament, it is going to be hard to stop the passage of such a law, but it is not impossible to provoke a social reaction in the Portuguese civil society. This could also try to pressure the political parties to abstain from deciding on this issue (as euthanasia was neither in the electoral programs, nor in debate during the election campaign) and/or to assemble a referendum on this debate.
One of the things that this prolife group of associations will try to do is to publish, advertise and/or broadcast on TV and radio some spots during a long or short time, depending on the money they will be able to raise and the urgency of the political situation.
This initiative needs everybody’s support and help. It is important to send all the materials, documents or links that any association or federation uses on this issue, in order to use them on this debate, particularly any videos and posters.
