Madrid, January 26, 2018.-Faced with the imminent parliamentary debates in some countries among which is Spain, where it is currently discussing a bill of rights and guarantees of the person before the final process of life, the organizers decided that a reflection on this issue was essential and give voice to the part of society that defends life from its beginning to its natural end. In this regard was held at the Congress of Deputies, on Friday 26 January, the International Seminar Palliative Care and Social Vs. Euthanasia, organized by the Securities and Society Foundation, the Family Association and Human Dignity, the European Federation One of Us, the Jérôme Lejeune Foundation and Network for Political values and has had the participation of numerous national and international experts and the presence of hundreds of people from civil society. In addition, more than 1,240 people have followed the Seminar by streaming
The seminar stressed that euthanasia corrupts the first principle of medicine, which is acting for the good of the patient. And it is concluded that the solutions to the end of life passing by treating the death as a natural phase in which the patient is help respecting their dignity as a person, so that in dramatic situations and terminals eliminate the patient’s pain and not the patient. In this sense, the only ethical response are possible palliative care. Otherwise, “we will see how the consequences of regulation of euthanasia will end inexorably others decide which lives are worthy or not to be lived,” said Lourdes Mendez, President of the Family Association and Human Dignity.
Euthanasia is currently legalized since 2002 in the Netherlands, a few months later did Belgium and Luxembourg added in 2009. Colombia in 2015, and Canada in 2016. Assisted suicide is permitted in Switzerland, Germany, and in six US states: Oregon, Washington, Montana, Vermont, California, Colorado and Washington DC
