830.000 signatures were delivered to the Parliament of Poland on Thursday, November 30. Supporters of the Citizens Initiative #StopAbortion greatly surpassed the required by law minimum of 100.000 signatures. Now, the legal proposition to ban eugenic abortion will be proceed by the Polish Parliament within the next three months.
The number of signatories is a record number ever collected in Poland in any pro-life initiative. The reason behind was quite simple. The initiative focused only on a eugenic ban of abortion, which is responsible for 99% so called “legal” abortions in Poland (around 1000 babies). There was no penalization of woman in legal proposal. This was one of the reasons The Conference of Polish Catholic Bishops firmly supported the initiative and even appeal several times during signature collection to assure of their support.
Also politician of the ruling Law and Justice party and the members of government publicly supported the initiative. Prime Minister Beata Szydlo said she will vote for ban of eugenic abortion and President of Poland declared that he would sign the new proposition into law if voted by the Parliament. The Chair of the Party Jaroslaw Kaczynski said it is unthinkable that we allow children to be aborted only because they are ill and the chair of the Law and Justice Parliamentary group Ryszard Terlecki publicly signed the citizens’ project. This signs give a great deal of hope that it will become law within the next few months.
Organizer of the initiative “Life and Family” Foundation Kaja Godek is herself a mother of a child with a Down syndrome. She fights for he child “to grew up in a country that does not allow to people like my son to be legally killed”.
