The Executive Committee of One of Us has held its Executive Committee meeting for the first time in Malta on Saturday 28 January.
One of Us supports the efforts of Maltese civil society, and all organizations which are affirming the right to life of the unborn child. Malta should take pride in the fact that it is the only EU country which does not permit the killing of unborn children except as an indirect effect of interventions to save the life of the mother.
Resorting to abortion as a pseudo solution to health problems of pregnant women, runs counter to the concept that human life starts at conception, and should be protected at every stage. Considering “the demographic winter “facing the European continent owing to a very low birth rate, one should even more so protect each an every life, rather than destroy it. The dignity of every human being starts at conception, for every unborn human life is “one of us”
During the Executive Committee, which discussed the Strategic Plan for 2023, the Committee reiterated that there is no fundamental right to abortion. Such right is not recognized as fundamental in any international human rights instrument. Nor have the European Institutions, whether those of the EU or the Council of Europe, ever recognized such right as fundamental. Indeed, attempts to introduce such right as fundamental by the European Parliament run counter to the subsidiarity principle and no such right can be imposed on member states according to the EU treaties. Such attempt also goes against the thinking and inspiration of the founding fathers of the EU such as Monet, Schuman, De Gasperi and Adenauer, who recognised the Christian values on which the history of Europe is based and the right to life is a human right which has to be recognized.
The Executive Committee will be closely following developments in Malta and will offer all the necessary assistance to pro-life organizations in their laudable efforts to continue protecting the values of Maltese society. Malta stands as a shing example to Europe in terms of protection of human life from conception.
