While in the afternoon France’s National Assembly is expected to vote on the law that reduces restrictions on research into human embryos and embryo stem cells, the newspaper La Croix and the French Bishops Conference recall and revive the European petition “One Of Us”, which is supported by 4 French organisations: the Catholic Family Associations (Afc), Alliance Vita, the Jérôme Lejeune Foundation and the Evangelical Protestant Committee for Human Dignity (Cpdh). Both the Catholic newspaper and the French Bishops recall that the petition has put together 66,799 signatures in France so far, which is 120.36% more than the target initially set out for the European initiative (55,500). Most of the signatures (56,052) have been collected online. The rest (10,747) on paper. As to this afternoon’s voting by the National Assembly, the 4 “Un de nous” associations have teamed up to ask, in a release, the delegates to “defend the dignity of every living human being against any research that leads to its destruction” and “denounce the way the fate of frozen human embryos is bound to be conditional on the National Assembly’s vote, cast on the sly and with no debate”.
