On February 8, took place the conference at the Hotel Stanhope in Brussels entitled «Abortion is not a fundamental right of the EU.»
Organized by One of Us and the Institute of European Studies of the CEU San Pablo University , the conference brought together MEPs from the EPP group and the ECR group, representatives of civil society belonging to the One of Us European Federation and more than 200 people followed the event in person and online.
All of them stated emphatically that abortion is not a right and cannot be part of the EU’s charter of fundamental rights. This supposed right attacks the very European identity that in its Charter of Fundamental Rights the Title I establishes the recognition of human dignity, the right to life, the right to the integrity of the person, the prohibition of torture and of violent or degrading punishment or treatment and the death penalty.
The introduction of this claim to include a supposed right to abortion in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights was proclaimed by Emmanuel Macron in the opening speech of the French EU Presidency. Faced with this claim, the European civil society has repeatedly demonstrated against this attack on the fundamental rights and freedoms of European citizens and on this Conference was stated the firm opposition of the civil society, the University and the representatives of the 15 countries present at the event .
During the conclusions, the Professor Rémi Brague pointed out that we cannot address the problem of abortion isolating it from its causes, alluding to the negligence of public authorities and the abandonment of pregnant women. Given the irresponsibility that accompanies society and States that present abortion as a solution and as «progress», it is worth asking if abortion is really not only a brutal solution but something that prevents us from seeing and treating the real problem in depth.
From the One of Us European Federation we will continue to demand the protection of the unborn as One of Us and the accompaniment of women who face an unwanted and unexpected pregnancy. The social mobilization showed Europe that European citizens believe that the stake for life is the future of each Nation and of Europe, will continue to work for the recognition of the rights of the unborn human being and not for their elimination
